In Debt We Trust: America Before The Bubble Bursts

Danny Schechter, USA, 2007, 90 min

In Debt We Trust is documentary investigates why so many Americans are being strangled by debt. It is a journalistic confrontation with what former Reagan advisor Kevin Phillips calls "Financialization" – the "powerful emergence of a debt and credit industrial complex." While many Americans may be "maxing out" on credit cards, there is a deeper story: power is shifting into fewer hands...with frightening consequences. The film reveals the predatory practices of the cabal of credit card companies, lobbyists, media conglomerates and the Bush administration itself who have colluded to deregulate the lending industry – ensuring that a culture of credit dependency can flourish. The debt issue is an increasing global problem as more people buy into America's false dreams.

The Cat of Mirikitani

Linda Hattendorf, USA 2006, 74 min.

Make art not war” adalah moto hidup Jimmy Mirikitani, seorang pelukis keturunan Jepang yang dilahirkan di California dan dibesarkan di Hiroshima yang akhirnya hidup di jalanan kota New York. Linda Hatendorf mulai mendokumentasikan pertemuan-pertemuan mereka setelah tragedi WTC.

Make art not war” is Jimmy Mirikitani's motto. He's a fiercely independent octogenarian artist born in California and raised in Hiroshima but ended up living on the streets of New York City. Local filmmaker, Linda Hattendorf first noticed him outside a Soho grocery store, bundled against the weather, concentrating on his colourful drawings. She began documenting their meetings. On 9/11/01, after the World Trade Center collapses, Linda finds him still outdoors, coughing in the toxic dust. Although he has refused help before, he accepts her offer of a place to stay. With her role suddenly changed from witness to advocate, Linda learns more about Jimmy's painful history: from his internment in Tule Lake from 1942- 1946, to the US citizenship he was pressured to renounce, to his family killed in the bombing of Hiroshima. She also makes some happy discoveries: Janice Mirikitani, the poet laureate of San Francisco, is a distant relative and there may be others. Ultimately, with Linda's help, Jimmy brings his life full circle and comes to terms with the past.

Aus der Zeit (Out of Time)

Harald Friedl , 80 min, Austria, prod. Harald Friedl, 2006

Aus der Zeit takes a look at Vienna from the opposite angle, filming a few days in the life of four old-fashioned artisan shop-keepers: a fine-leather goods dealer, a drugstore owner, a haberdasher and a butcher. These days are special, as for two of them their businesses are about to close. The exercise is not a formal one: in the distance separating the modern world heralded in by Ruttman’s Berlin and the suspended time typical of the old shops in Harald Friedl’s film, we are able to measure what has been lost, what Ruttman’s film had already abolished, starting with human beings—who return to occupy the centre of the frame—and their role in history.

(Those Waiting In The Dark)

Nicolás Rincón Gille, 77 min, Belgium, prod. VOA, CBA, 2006

At night, the Colombian countryside undergoes a transformation. Those who prowl around can grant or take away magic powers. Carmen knows, she has experienced it: at night, it’s wiser to prick up your ears and stay home, when you have lost the power to tell the future. Carmen’s life has not been easy, with a violent husband and one pregnancy after another. But she still knows how to recognise the sound of a passing witch… Carmen’s partner, one of her employees, can find some amusement in the village. She can only recount, in shivers or smiles, the chapters of her survival, the pride of having raised children, her fragile resistance against the crushing forces of this world, and the invisible one...

Small Places Small Homes

Julia Fong, Canada, 60 min, 2006

This film explores the lives of visible minority immigrants who choose to live in Canadian rural communities. How these four film families profiled in this documentary chose where to live and how this choice has affected their lives reveals common themes: the feeling of isolation in a largely Caucasian rural Canada; the notion of sacrifice, of working very hard at creating a new life in this vast country, and what it means to become a Canadian

Alguna Tristeza/ Some Kind of Sadness

In the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, the Peruvian football team beat Austria to qualify for the semi-finals. An unpalatable victory for the Third Reich and for the Olympic Committee… so they cancelled the match. Images of a stolen victory, of a country abandoned to its fate by the rest of the world, like an animal left on the wayside. Images of a nation shaken by the world’s turbulent, unpredictable events, surviving from day to day, where there is no longer anyone at the government’s helm.

The filmmaker's honeymoon trip in 1970 led him and his wife Jacqueline, complete with backpack and camera, all through the Bolivian Andes. On their way they discovered the old silver mining city of the Incas, Potosi, once one of the biggest and most prosperous cities in the world. Three decades later they go back there again with a film camera and their three daughters. The film documents this journey, putting the footage in relation to the photographs taken during the first trip. Stone Time Touch

Armenian-Canadian experimental filmmaker Gariné Torossian weaves together a poetic collage of memory, loss and expectation in this essay documentary of a real and imagined Armenia. Interwoven with a young woman's journey to her homeland are the photographs and reflections of Arsinée Khanjian. As Khanjian recounts the powerful stories she was told during her visits to Armenia, she unpeels her own expectations of the "imaginary homeland." This diary-like exploration is layered with religious iconography, ritual, contemporary struggle and the burden of history. The beautifully haunting voices of the Armenian acapella folk trio Zulal underscore the emotional connection the women share to a land that is and is not theirs. An elegiac and sensory investigation into the concepts of home, identity and place. In Armenian and English with English subtitles.

Arcana

The final year before the closure of Valparaiso prison. In this huge “town within a town”, hundreds of inmates are crammed into run-down cells, amble across the vast central courtyard, move around the corridors in groups. Loudspeakers mechanically blare out roll calls and orders. In its hundred and fifty years of existence, this city of prisoners has given birth to a terrible form of “culture”: its set of practices, itineraries, customs and dialects. It is a culture opaque for anyone from the “outside”, a network of relationships and codes that the filmmaker can but hint at, mainly through working on sounds. An inmate repeatedly challenges him to understand or even get close to prison reality. The old prison of Valparaiso was finally closed in April 1999.

The Red Elvis

This film tells the story of Dean Reed's rise and fall. His tragic life is a mosaic dominated by his longing for success and his naïve political engagement at a time when the world was divided by two major ideologies. Reed's mysterious death still gives rise to speculation and is reason enough to take a look behind the of his life of showbiz and protest. Apart from familymembers, other contemporaries looking back on Dean Reed's life in this film include Chilean radio DJ Chucho Fernandez, writer Isabel Allende, American radio host Peter Boyles, actor Armin Mueller-Stahl, DEFA film director Celino Bleiweiß and ex-GDR politician
